In that regard, the project was given the highest level of Envision certification platinum from the Institute of Sustainable Infrastructure in June , leading the way for modern engineering and urban integration. Our teams are motivated by changing our world for the better. Overall, the project improves traffic management, road safety, and access to the city of Montreal and the South Shore of the island. It is also transforming the way local communities cross and enjoy the Saint Lawrence River. Cyclists and pedestrians can travel safely along the multi-use path on the northbound structure, and enjoy exceptional views of the city from each of the four observation points. A few months ago, the Signature sur le Saint-Laurent SSL , the company responsible for building the new Champlain Bridge, announced that the bridge would open to traffic on one side on June 3rd. The other side was supposed to open June 17th according to the original plans. The federal government, who is overseeing the project, reportedly doubted that those dates were accurate. Deconstruction over the busy St. Lawrence Seaway shipping route will only happen when the seaway is closed, from January to March. The old structure cannot be maintained because it is crumbling and poses a risk to shipping traffic, pleasure boaters and the ecosystem of the St. Lawrence River. Dismantling is expected to be a complex process, as sections of the steel and reinforced concrete bridge will have to be removed piece by piece. Details of how the deconstruction will take place are still to be determined, officials with Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated — which holds responsibility for the spans — said Wednesday.
Elements will be removed by road and on barges in the river. Most of the steel and concrete will be reused or recycled, either in other building projects or as landfill in construction projects. The old bridge is 3. There will be numerous closures of the bridge, mainly at night, to level and repave the entire span.
